The Battle of Worcester Society

Ken2.JPGThe Battle of Worcester Society has been recently founded to promote the study of the English Civil war in Worcestershire, in particular the 1651 Battle of Worcester, and ensure that the local authorities adopt our project as a major tourist priority.

The members of the Society beleieve that more should be done to commemorate the Battle of Worcester and promote this dramatic event in the Faithful City's past.

The aims of the project include:-

  • A major memorial to the Battle of Worcester in the city centre
  • A memorial to the dead, who lie in unmarked burial pits on Powick Ham
  • A trail of artworks depicting scenes from the battle in 3D, at the locations involved
  • A battlefield experience trail harnessing modern technology
  • Signage on the Worcester bypass and M5
  • A professional archaeological appraisal of the entire battlefield and associated sites
  • A purpose-built battlefield interpretation centre

A "Battlefield Committee" has been established, chaired by the Mayor of Worcester, and comprising officers from the City Council, the County Council and representitives of the Society. The committee is studying every detail of what is a huge project and compiling an application for substantial funding to the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The Society's aim in this process is contribute fully to the realisation of the aims of the project and to act as a pressure group to ensure that our vision is achieved.
