On 15th May 1862 at the Philadelphia Corn Exchange, to answer President Lincoln's call for volunteers, a decision was made to fund and form a regiment of Infantry. By 30th August 1,000 men had answered the call and the 118th was mustered into the Union Army.
Its first action was at Sheperdstown Ford on September 19th 1862 where they sustained high casualties. They continued service in the Army of the Potomac until the Confederate surrender at Appomattox in 1865.
We are a small group of 25 or so re-enactors trying to portray as accurately as possible the life and times of these men of the 118th. Most of us are based in the Midlands but other members come from all over England, one member is from New York and his great x 3 father fought in the original Company C back in 1862. Our members come from all walks of life and age is no obstacle, we welcome children. The Regiment is a member of the American Civil War Society in Great Britain and takes part in re-enactments all over England and other European Countries, we also provide living history exhibits, demonstrations and talks to schools, clubs and societies.
Re-enacting takes a little commitment but is very rewarding and great fun; should you be interested in joining us or wish to use our services please feel free to contact us. Our web site can be reached through www.acws.co.uk.
