9th East Norfolk Regiment

9th AdvanceThe Regiment was founded in 1685 by James II in response to the Monmouth rebellion. The Reg't was then involved in the wars in Ireland, it fought with Marlborough in the Low Countries, in time it went on to the Americian War of Independance and the Spanish Succesion. The first battallion landed in the Peninsula in August 1808 and distinguished itself at the battle of Vimiero, at Corunna the Reg't was the last to leave Spanish soil. After the disasterous Walcheren expidition it returned to join Wellesey's army and then fight at every major stage of the campaign right through to Bayonne in 1814.
The Reg't was very much at the fore during the seige and storming of. San Sebastian in 1813. As the Reg't was sent to Canada in 1814 at the end of the Penninsula campaign it was not involved in the Waterloo campaign, hovever it returned in time to be involved in the occupation of France before returning to Great Britian in 1818.

Close upOur re-enactment unit depicts a centre company of the 1/9th, one of Wellingtons heavy infantry battallions in the Penninsular. We seek to re-create as much as possible the life of 'the scum of the earth' around 1810. The unit is involved in both living history and battle re-enactment and we seek to achieve a high degree of realism in both these fields.
We attend most of the Napoleonic Association events during the course of the season. We also arrange our own displays and events, attending a number of fairs during the Summer.

We hold training days usually throughout the early part of the year, these are normally held at Tilbury Fort in Essex. Through these drills we seek to maintaine the highest standard of drill and battlefield safety for the benefit of all. We also use these occasions to practice displays and to extend our repertoire.

The Reg't holds occasional social events in the closed season and during the Winter there are a number of informal wargaming sessions.

We welcome everyone and are keen to foster a strong family involvment covering all ages.

BattleWhat can I do?
You have three choices;
1.Infantry soldier; This is the most popular career. As an infantry man you will learn period drill,manoeuvring as part of a unit. You will be trained in the working and firing of a musket and how to handle it undewr orders.
2.Musician;Drum or Fife. You will need to have an aptitude to learn to play these instruments if you don't already play a simliar instrument in modern life.
3.Campfollower; Predominately, but not exclusively women and children, they form an integral part of historical camp life and are actively involved in the groups running.
