Eye on the Past

 MedievalBill

Based and working mostly out of Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings, just outside Bromsgrove, Eye on the Past is a small group of historical re-enactors presenting aspects of life in late Medieval and Tudor England.  Unlike many re-enactment groups which present large-scale battle reconstructions, Eye on the Past concentrate on more intimate, personal presentations, showing the life of individuals and their pastimes.  Some skills (eg cooking, food preservation, leatherwork) are portrayed, always including the personal aspects, and comparing and contrasting life in the past with life in the present.

Established in 1989, Eye on the Past has ensured that visitors leave having experienced something of living in the periods being depicted, by allowing participation in the activities on show.  These range from music and instruments of the day to weapons used in both defence and war.  Period games are a speciality and both children and adults can join in playing them, both indoors and out (weather permitting!).

Our equipment is reproduction (originals are far too valuable to have on show and in use), but are based on the genuine artefacts of the Medieval and Tudor periods.  Their purpose and usage is explained and demonstrated by experienced members of the group, who have a combined heritage of more than 100 years in re-enactment.  As well as entertaining, Eye on the Past aim to educate.  Many people remember learning history at school as memorising dates and names of battles and kings.  Eye on the Past help to show there is much more to understanding the past and that learning about it can be fun!
